Minister of Agriculture – Hon Frank Tumwebaze visits the National Genebank stall

A team from the Uganda National Genebank explained to the Minister of Agriculture – Hon Frank Tumwebaze about the main aim of the National Genebank which collects and conserves our local diversity as exhibited in their Noah’s Ark at NaCORRI, Kituza on 16th October, 2023 - World Food Day.

The theme was Water is Life, Water is Food. The Minister stated that “As long as we live, food is indispensable of our lives. Therefore, farmers and breeders should continue collaborating for that cause”.

The Director General of NARO, Dr. Yona Baguma further clarified the value chain from the genebank diversity by illustrating NARO breeder’s list of improved crops. The germplasm held is freely available for different users on request.

The NARL staff displays the food value chain from the local conserved diversity in the genebank to products such as Banluxe hair extensions made from bananas.

Local dishes prepared from our local diversity was displayed by Asao’s Kitchen of Kireka. These include Lapena from Acholi/ N-E Uganda, Boo (Ghobe) and Malewa (Bamboo) from Bugishu.

Former Minister of Agriculture Hon. Victoria Ssekitoleko and the National genebank team exchange contact for future collaboration.

Numerous pictures were taken by visitors who were excited to see the disappearing indigenous crops displayed.
