Katikiro's visit at the National Genebank stall, NARL, Kawanda

The Prime Minister (Katikiro) of the Buganda Kingdom visit at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories, Kawanda


The Prime Minister (Katikiro) of the Buganda Kingdom - Charles Peter Mayiga and other kingdom delegates visited the National Agricultural Research Laboratories in Kawanda for a special exhibition. These were accompanied by the Director General of NARO, Dr. Yona Baguma, other Directors and welcomed at the Institute by the NARL Director of Research. One of the research products which attracted the Katikiro included a diversity of seed sample display conserved at the Uganda National Genebank. At the genebank stall, the guests were received by the Genebank Manager – Ms. Eva Zaake who explained that” seed is conserved for food security and research, without indigenous seed, breeders face difficulties in producing improved varieties”. The Katikiro who had already toured four other distant NARO Institutes commented that “When he gets exhausted for a good cause, he sleeps a contented man”. He further commended NARL staff for job well done and added that “We need science to improve farming for better livelihoods in Uganda as the Pearl of Africa”. The germplasm held in the National genebank is freely available for different users on request.

The event was latter concluded by planting of a renown medicinal plants – Warburgia ugandensis provided by the PGRC team.
