Quality Management System (QMS) intensive training
Representatives from the Global Diversity Crop Trust (GDCT) under the BOLD project – Janny Van Beem (The Global partnership coordinator of the BOLD project) and Nassir Meriem (Project manager) visited the Uganda National Genebank (UNGB) from 19th – 22nd February, 2024 to validate and train staff in Quality Management aspects. Janny informed the staff that Quality management attracts partnership and funding. The team was later joined by Dr. Alex Balikye from National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) and Eng. Charles Kibirige from National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) Secretariate.
Dr. Balikye gave welcome remarks on behalf the National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) Director, Dr. Robooni Tumuhimbise and thanked GDCT for their technical and financial support. Eng. Kibirige advised that there is need to construct a new genebank instead of remolding. This was followed by a brief meeting with the DDGR, Dr. Swidiq Mugerwa and the DG, Dr. Yona Baguma at the Secretariate on the way forward.
The DDGR noted that the National Genebank should be the central unit and custodian of germplasm acquisition. Breeders should acquire germplasm through the genebank and then access it from the genebank for effective data management, he added. The DG stated that the 10 year’s support and network with Crop Trust will enables us to harness the resource and improve the genebank facility.
